The Bald Brothers Brothers Richardt and Willie du Plessis were born in a small town in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After graduating from university, they travelled for a few years through Central America, Europe and South East Asia and eventually settled in Sliema. The brothers, who have a Dutch/German background, are only two years apart and say that they have always had a good relationship; they had a lot of mutual friends and played lots of sports growing up. Newsbook.com.mt spoke to the two siblings, who are behind the Bald Brothers blog, which was started in 2019 to help men overcome hair loss and balding issues and live the best lives possible. Through their blog, which garners thousands of daily readers, they share their hair loss journey with their readers and advised them what not to do. Willie was around 22 or 23 years old when his hair loss began: “It was a big deal for me at that age and the thought of losing my hair was catastrophic! I was distraught and in denial. It took me almost eight years to take the plunge and shave it all off. After trying different shampoos and hair growth, I realised they just weren’t working. One morning in early 2019, I decided to just shave it all off with clippers. The rest is history as they say.” Richardt started losing his hair even earlier, when he was 19 or 20 years old: “I just kind of tried to forget about it and got ‘smart’ with styling my hair. I even grew my hair out super long (big mistake for balding guys, as this just elevates your baldness more). I think it’s just about trying to always cover it up, so it occupies your mind a ton; always thinking if someone can see your baldness. Shaving your head actually does get rid of every single hair loss emotion you have, because when you take the plunge, you immediately eliminate any hair loss issues you have, as there’s no hair left!” If a man reading this article is currently going through this experience, Willie’s advice would be that, at the first sign of hair loss, he should shave his head with a pair of clippers.“ You don’t need to get the razor blade out yet. The simple act of shaving your head with a pair of clippers at the first sign of male pattern baldness means that you are taking ownership of your hair loss and will therefore not suffer the emotional turmoil that comes with balding,” he asserts. Richardt continues: “The thing is, once it starts, it doesn’t stop. There really isn’t any way to actually stop hair loss, let alone reverse it, especially if your hair loss is genetic. If you know your hair will slowly but surely continue to fall out, then why wait and suffer for years? You can literally own your hair loss completely by getting rid of it, and it gives you time to rebrand yourself as a new person with a new look.” Guys who shave their heads often tend to come across as more confident. Willie says that he completely understand what men who do comb-overs to try and salvage what little hair they have left are going through: “Society has told us for years that hair loss and balding is a negative and sign of weakness. Denial and trying to hang onto their last strains of hair is what most men do when they are balding. So I feel sorry for them but I encourage them to overcome it by taking the plunge and shaving it off as soon as possible.” It’s a lot of work, actually!” adds Richardt, “Especially if you are a person who stresses a lot about keeping the combover perfect. One gust of wind, or a few drops of rain, and you need to run for shelter to make sure it’s all good! Guys who actually shave their heads do often tend to come across as more confident, which leads to beauty.” The brothers recently launched their Bald Boss moisturiser; it was mainly spurred on by Richardt who realised there wasn’t really a grooming/moisturising product out there specifically made for bald men with their scalps in mind.“ Our product is made with really awesome ingredients and extracts, and I kind of went for a formula which I personally like. No chemicals, no rubbish ingredients and no fragrance. We think it’s a winner. We have a few ideas for other bald head grooming products too which we can hopefully put into action soon,” Richardt concludes.
